As of 2022–2025,
over 320 million people speak French worldwide, ranking it
the fifth-most spoken language globally. It is used daily by roughly 212 million people, with over 60% of its speakers living in Africa.
The language is official in 29 countries and is rapidly growing, with projections suggesting it could reach over 700 million by 2050. In 2009,
French was spoken as a
first language
by over 77 million people; as a heritage and
second language by over 190 million; and as
an
acquired foreign language by
approximately 200 million people, with
French speakers present in 57 different countries. Most
native French
speakers live in France, where the language
originated. They also live in Canada, Monaco,
and parts of Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
